Topic: cycling

Nice two-hour ride yesterday. My friends had promised a "civilized" pace to help me get back on the road. I've had minimal miles for the last few weeks due to pranging a rib on my mtb. There was a headwind on the outbound leg, but that's usual for the route we took. The pace was indeed very civilized and supportive. I did drop off the back because I was ready to cut the course short, so it was time to send them on their way. I'm looking forward to the next ride.

The map in my previous post is for a ride to be led by me and sponsored by the QCBC. See the ride description on this page. Scroll down to Sept. 22. The map is from MapMyRide.com, a very cool site. Go visit!

Go, ride, have fun!

Topic: cycling

235 weight this morning. Need to do a little sweat time today.

Yesterday was spent on home projects with good results. I need to continue that project today.

The Paragon has come home! I rode gravel with MG and PH on Wednesday during midday. A little breezy it was, but not a biting cold. I was having a hard time keeping up (what a surprise!) on the concrete. However, when we hit the gravel...well, I still had trouble climbing, but man, the 29er can sail down a hill. I stuck my nose into the loose stuff just to see what would happen. Piece of cake! I still have to play with the seat placement, but things fall in pretty good now. It's definitely a different riding position from that of the Zinn, but it's good, very good.

Got a few wheel building tools for Christmas. I have a Park truing stand and base on order. I also ordered copies of Gerd Schraner's wheel build book and also Josh Brandt's. Maybe I'll have everything together when I build the Delgado/high flange combo.

Time to git on the git go.

first cyclocross
Topic: cycling

So, first race. East Village Cross in the East Village of Davenport. And I hurt right now, pain just kind of permeating my whole corpus. Not a corpse quite yet though; I didn't ride that hard.

The day started out a little rough in that I bent a rim about 100 yards after I started. It seems my skills at bunny-hopping curbs could use some work. So, my blood pressure rose as I carried my bike back to my car. I drove home and picked up my trusty mountain bike. Is it true that you can't break the things you don't care so much about breaking? Kind of like you cannot lose a junky golf ball?

So, I came back with the mtb in time to see the first race. I took some decent video, which I will try to hammer into a litle documentary. First time for me to use the camera; I had some problems in starting and stopping the recording. I'll piece it together with Windows Movie Maker, but I'd like to snip ends from some of the video clips. Anyone know a good easy freeware video editor that will do that?

And the race I rode was the Cat 4 only race. 35 minutes plus two laps, which took me about 53 minutes and 30 seconds. I did six laps. The first half of the field at least did eight laps. Some did seven. I don't know how many did six. What I feel pretty good about is that I made the first lap before the lead women made up the minute gap between my start and theirs. Not so bad in my books. I also usually ride the shortest race; today, I went farther. The low point was when I didn't do such a good job on a bunny hop in the "rock garden", a strange little set of flagstones with a log in the middle. I hopped the log but took a tumble after, wacked the left side of my head really good. Score one for wearing a helmet. I'll be visiting my chiropractor soon!

mid-paced ride, saturday, sept. 16
Topic: cycling

Good ride today. 40 miles in about 2.5 hours. Not fast, not at all, just a comfortable spin, probably could have done the whole ride in the small ring. I'm finding that the 34 spins out just a bit, but I hesitate to give it up on the big hills. A 36 might not be bad, now that I've got a 27 to play with. Might have to consider that.

When I got to the start of the ride, nobody was there. A few minutes later, another guy showed up. He said the ride leader for the day lived just up the hill; however, she was a no-show. A few other people did show up, including a couple of guys I'd never ridden with. After a couple of miles up the bike trail, there was a definite split, and the three of us up front never saw the rest again.

These two guys were more my speed, at least for the day. We cruised together when the wind was calm, maybe 17-18mph, but when we turned into the wind, I motored out front and led for the following six miles. A couple of times I looked down at my hrm at found I was runninng 133. That's race pace for me, but I was feeling. Earlier, I had only been running 108. There was a crosswind or a headwind most of the way back in. We stopped for a minute at an intersection and then for maybe five minutes at a quick shop.

Just the ride I needed. Now I need some cross bike time.

Stats:
1297 kcal
144 max
112 avg
2:38:45 traintime
power zone = 0:00:42
fitness zone = 0:30:45
health zone = 1:44:20 (whoa, was I even breathing?)

40.12 miles (a lap around the parking lot got the even 40)
2:32:14 bike time
26.2 max
15.8 avg

tale of the tape
Topic: cycling

Distances and speeds
6-hour official distance = 105.6 miles
total ridden as per my cyclocomputer = 108.82 miles
max speed = 33.4 mph
on-bike avg = 18.1 mph
total avg = 17.65 mph

HRM stats
4739 kcal
156 max (I have no idea when that happened; I never felt that bad. Had to be hill or headwind)
129 avg (my road races average around 133, so that's good)
6:13:42 total time***
power z (>135bpm)= 13:59:00
fitness z (115-135bpm) = 4:31:03
health z (<115bpm) = 1:28:31

***A bit wonky. As usual I didn't turn it on until about eight minutes into the ride, and I didn't turn it off until a few minutes after I got back.

Goals assessment
Now Playing: Goals assessment
Topic: cycling

I had four goals for this year:

  1. This was going to be my TT year.
  2. I was going to drop weight.
  3. I was going to limit my racing.
  4. I was going to increase my cadence.

TT year:

I didn't make that happen. I raced in the 20K and the 40K and the Senior Olympic race. I flatted in the 20K, rode a decent race in the 40K and Senior Oly. The increase in time between last year's 40K and this year's 40K can be accounted for by my not using aero bars. I felt stronger this year, but that's subjective. Maybe I didn't push quite as hard.

So, why no other TTs? Gas prices. I had planned to drive to a number of TTs near Iowa City. No way to afford that.

Drop weight.

Yeah, I did for a while before going to Europe. Then I stopped. Honestly, I just ate more and drank beer. I won't flaggelate myself because that's just a different form of self-aggrandizement.

Limit racing

No and yes. In absolute numbers of races, I'll probably do the same number this year as last year, assuming I do all four cyclocross races. I haven't been driving long distances to do races. I cut the TTs out.

What I did do was to add a couple of events: the Balltown Classic, the Gran Fondo, and the Metamora 4x50. I took on Balltown in preparation for the Gran Fondo. And after not finishing Balltown, I wanted to do Metamora, a race/ride that hadn't existed when I made my race schedule for the year.

What also happened was that I finally got going and put the big red bike back together into a lovely cross bike. That will extend my season but in a good way, I think. CX races are short. I've been doing long, long rides. East Village CX will be 25 minutes + 2 laps. Basically, I have to warm up for an hour and then hit it hard from the git-go.

Cadence and gearing

Definite yes. I now choose to ride at 85rpm in short(er) rides. I also use a higher rpm when climbing. That is not true across the board, though. I found that, in the second half of the double-century I completed and in the second half of the one I did not, I needed to grind big gears to give my legs a different feeling. High-speed spinning was burning out my legs, or at least that was the feeling I had.

Summary

I did not meet two of my four goals. I met the other two.

I also found that I can ride a lot farther than I ever thought. And I've had some good climbing days. I had not planned on those results.

I have not ridden a criterium this year. I've ridden only a couple of regular road races. This feels odd because I don't go to the same events that my teammates have been competing in, other than to officiate.

But I'm also not burned out. I did that to myself a couple of years ago, both running and cycling. In August, I was just dead. Now, I feel pretty good.

So what for the rest of the year...and into the next

For the short term, I need to ride the course for the 6-hour.

For cx season, I need to do hill repeats and sprint work, either on the bike or on the trainer. I also need to work on my dismount and hurdling. So, I need to run, too.

And, I need to continue to ride as much outside as possible through the fall and winter. I need to schedule trainer time.

Or I have to be satisfied with the results I get. To some extent, I have come to that conclusion. I don't see myself putting in massive amounts of time on training. But I have the equipment, and I can find some time. So, I should be able to find some improvement.

Wednesday evening ride
Topic: cycling

Lovely ride this evening. My plan was to go ride a small loop that's part of a race course. However, it turned out that I needed to ride about 18 miles to even get there. But even with the headwind, I had a great ride, a nice tune-up. I tried my on-bike break, which seemed to work well. And it just felt good to be out in the evening air.

I actually had a little apprehension before riding. This is the first I had been on the bike since last Saturday. I guess that ride took a little more out of me than I thought.

And the route is going to have more rollers. But hey, it's gonna be good. This I know.

Cyclocomputer data
43.73 miles
34.7 max
17.7 avg
2:28:05

Now, there was about ten minutes or so, along with the mileage, that didn't record because I had shifted my computer. The contacts were spot on.

HRM data
1819 Kcal
Max 140
Avg 120
Train time 2:48:48
0:00 power zone (145+)
1:06 fitness zone (115-145)
1:36 health zone (sub-115)

A reprise of Nice, Feltre, and Venice
Topic: cycling

Check out Bryan Moritz's web site for photos of our Eurotrip. Bryan is one of the cinco caballeros who went cycling together. He, as are the other three guys I got to go with, is a nice guy and a great cyclist.

We had a little Fondo Fest the other night to celebrate the trip with shared photos and stories. A most excellent evening.
